Hadn't up and left him, although things might get tricky if she found out he was still killing people.

But at the moment she held him tightly as well. His mind was fascinating, and the sex mind-blowing, but there was a deeper connection there that she couldn't deny, deeper than common interest, right to a common foundation, a common perspective. And there was a strange sort of vulnerability to him, a deep desire for connection, for love, even if it was painted over with a veneer of bravado.

"It is," she said. "It's still going to be difficult. Not as much as when you were in the institution, of course. But I'm willing to work with that. Because I want to be with you, too."
