The answer made Joan realize she had hoped that he would say yes. That there was some way to fit him into an acceptable mold. But that wasn't Martin. His crimes were unapologetically horrendous. She had to reconcile that with her affection for him, and it wasn't easy.

Still, she answered that grin with a warm smile of her own, and raised her own glass to clink against his. "Cheers!"

She took a sip of wine. "Mmm! That is nice!"
