Martin spent quite a while cooking in preparation of Joan arriving. They had acquired a very nice one bedroom well outside of New York City while allowed them some privacy and anonymity. Martin was able to use his resources to find the place and was pleased with the results.

He had ordered some prime steaks to begin grilling in the kitchen as he awaited her arrival. Martin was dressed casually but still well put together in some suit pants and a nice sweater; never again to the scrubs. He glanced at the clock before turning to his phone to see if she had announced that she was on her way.

It had been five days since she'd seen him, and it felt like forever. There was really no helping it...in the throes of a case there was barely time to eat and sleep, let alone time to slip away to her clandestine lover, who, by the way, was a serial killer everybody thought was dead. But they had caught their suspect, and there were a few hours of waiting while the bureaucratic wheels turned before they could put the button on the case. Time enough go out for dinner with a friend, or so she told Sherlock. Sherlock knew she was hiding something from him, but she had played it the way she played all her sexual relationships she didn't want him nosing in on, so she was pretty sure he didn't realize just how much she wasn't telling him.

Once she left the station she flagged a taxi and texted that she was on her way. She gave the driver an address that was two blocks from the building. She always did that, just in case someone ever tracked down the drivers and grilled them about where she was going. She walked those two blocks, went up to their apartment, unlocked the door with her key, and let herself in.

The food smelled amazing.
